One of the popular granny square shapes, next to the actual square, is a hexagon. A six sided shape, worked in the round. I get alot of questions on what method I like to use to join these pieces.
So today I am going to show you how to work this Crochet Hexagon Join-As-You-Go with my Zippy Crochet Hexagons to make a simple trivet or placemat to brighten up your home.
If you’re looking to explore more captivating color combinations for your squares, hop on over to my Instagram and Pinterest. I love sharing lots of pics of my colour experiments there!

Getting Ready To Crochet Hexagon Join-As-You-Go
To start you will need to have Seven Zippy Hexagon pieces already made
You can find the free pattern for the Zippy Hexagon and the tutorial Here.
So before we move on to the joining method, Go ahead and make 7 of of these hexagons in whatever colour choices you would like.
I have used a worsted weight yarn, in 4 colours.
Parchment, Charcoal, True Grey and Barley.
I have made my pieces in sets of 3 of one colour way, 3 of another and a center one that is a little different again. However, you can make them all alike or make them all different, totally up to you.
I will be using the True Grey to join today and the Charcoal for the final edging round.
I will be using a 5.0 mm crochet hook.
Other tools you will need are a pair of scissors and a darning needle to work in your ends.
You will also be needing some kind of split stitch markers, I like to use these little rubbery ones that I picked up at my local Michaels.
I will be using 12 of these, so it is nice to pick up a little box like these with different colours.
Split Markers are the ones that open and close, this is very important so you can get them on and off your work easily at anytime.
If you don’t have access to stitch markers like these, you can really use anything such as paper clips, or even just a different colours of yarn than what your project is using.
