Hey, gang! Jane here with another colourful instalment of my Colour Journal series. Colour Journal 2 focuses on 5 more squares. If you missed the first post, be sure to check it out here. In that post, I shared my reasons for starting this series and how I approach my colour inspiration.
In today’s post, I’m thrilled to share some festive crochet inspiration as we explore five new colourways for my squares! This instalment is all about embracing the magic of the season with a theme that’s been dominating my hook lately: Holiday Colours. From vibrant reds and greens to a variety of soft and snowy whites, this palette captures the joy and warmth of the holidays.
For those of you crafting along with me, this post is packed with ideas to bring festive charm to your projects. Whether you’re working on handmade gifts, sprucing up your home decor, or just indulging in some creative downtime, these colour combinations will spark plenty of inspiration. And if you’re stumbling across this post at a later time, welcome! I recorded this about a month before Christmas, so the squares you’ll see are infused with all the seasonal cheer of the holidays.
As always, I’ve included everything you need to recreate these designs. Below, you’ll find images of each square, along with detailed descriptions of the colours I chose and the exact order I used them in. I’ve also linked the free patterns and tutorials for each square, so you can dive right in. Whether you’re drawn to traditional red-and-green combos, or more subtle and soft colours with a festive twist, there’s something here for everyone.
But that’s not all! For my visual learners, I’ve also created a video tutorial for these squares, which you can find on my YouTube channel. In the video, I walk you through my colour process round by round, offering additional tips and tricks to make your crochet journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
I can’t wait to show you the five squares I’ve been working on, so be sure to scroll down and take a closer look. Tools and Tips for Staying Organized
When working with lots of colour it really is handy to have a few tips on keeping things organized. These are a few of my tools that I like to use to keep me on track
1. Binder Rings for Colour Swatches
When I’m choosing colours, I pull out my sample squares (you may remember these from my Colour Choices video). For holiday projects, I gather a variety of reds, greens, and whites.
Once I’ve decided on a colour combination, I use binder rings to keep the swatches together. These little tools are lifesavers, especially if you’re working on multiple projects. Just clip your squares onto a ring, pop them into your project box, and voilà—no more forgetting your carefully chosen palette!
2. Metal Ring Tags
To make life even easier, I label my binder rings with metal ring tags. I write the project name or the square name on the tag, so I can instantly identify what belongs where. These tags are sturdy and reusable.
You can find both binder rings and metal tags at your local office supply store—they’re budget-friendly and endlessly helpful!
