Today’s post marks the start of something new and exciting—an opportunity to share a look into my Crochet Colour Journal, and share my creative process with you, especially when it comes to colours. Colour is such a big part of what I do, and it’s one of the most common things you ask me about. From how I choose my palettes to the brands and specific shades I use, your curiosity has inspired me to take a closer look at my process and invite you along for the journey.
This is the first in a series where I’ll open up my crochet colour journal and let you peek inside. I love spending evenings with my scrap yarn baskets, “colouring” with yarn and letting the combinations flow naturally. It’s a therapeutic and playful process for me—no strict rules, just the joy of seeing what works.
Recently, I asked in a community post if you’d be interested in seeing more about my colour choices. The response was overwhelmingly positive! Many of you said you’d love to know the specific colours, their names, and even the brands, all laid out clearly. You also wanted to see this in video form over on YouTube, so I’ve decided to add “colour journal” videos to my content mix over there as well.

What to Expect From Colour Journal Videos
In today’s first post, I’m showcasing five Granny Squares, each with its own unique colour story. You’ll find links to the tutorials for these squares with the colour palette info, and for each square, I’ll include:
- A full-colour photo of the square.
- A detailed list of the colours I used, including the yarn brands.
- The exact order in which the colours were worked into the square.
A Note About the Yarns I Use
Just a quick side note—I’m not sponsored by any of these yarn brands. The yarns I use are simply my personal favourites, chosen because I love their texture, quality, affordability and, of course, their colours. That said, brands often update their ranges, so some shades might no longer be available. If that’s the case, I hope my choices still give you a good starting point to find similar colours or inspire you to try something new.
I do have affiliate links below for my fav yarns and places to buy them, if you are interested in ordering them online and if you use these links I do get a small portion at no extra cost to you.
You guys also ask me where I like to get my yarns online.
One of my Favourite places to order online is Mary Maxim Yarns.
They carry great colour selection, nice variety of brands and are constantly offering specials and coupons.
A Real Peek Into My Creative Process
What’s exciting about this series is how it reflects my real creative process. Each day is a little different. Sometimes, I have a colour scheme in mind and work with it deliberately. Other days, I grab a box of yarn and let the colours choose me. It’s this organic, playful approach that keeps my creativity alive and thriving.
In future colour journal videos, I’ll be switching things up to keep things fresh and inspiring. Here’s what you can look forward to:
- Weeks where I focus on a single colour palette and use it across multiple square patterns.
- Videos featuring one square pattern worked in a variety of palettes to show how colour can completely transform a design.
- Other times, I’ll go for a mix-and-match approach, combining different squares and colour combos in a single video—just like today.
Why I’m Sharing This
I know that experimenting with colour can feel daunting, especially when you’re just starting out. My hope is that these posts and videos will spark your creativity and encourage you to play with colour in your own projects. Use these combinations as a jumping-off point to try new ideas, experiment with shades you might not usually reach for, and discover what makes your heart sing.
Let’s Dive In!
I’ve chosen a random selection of squares, a reflection of how I often work—letting inspiration lead the way. As you watch, I hope you feel encouraged to explore and experiment with your own colour palettes. The links to the square tutorials are attached to the images and their headings below.
