We’re onto square five in the Patchwork Medley Blanket Series, and this one’s a fresh take on the Free Spirit Crochet Square. The original version was a smaller square measuring approx 7 inches, so I’ve reworked it to match the size of the others, which is 8 1/2 inches—without it flaring out at the edges. I’ll walk you through a few tips and options to keep everything sitting just right as we go.
This series came about because so many of you asked how to combine my different Granny Square designs into one cohesive blanket. I’ve selected six of my favourites, added a brand-new one, and adjusted them all to fit together beautifully. Once all seven squares are complete, I’ll walk you through my JAYGO method to join them seamlessly for a cozy, stylish finish.
If you’re just jumping in, the first four squares are already up on the blog, and I’ve put together a handy YouTube playlist so you can follow along from the beginning.

Before we dive into today’s tutorial, I want to show you a completed version of this square. The centre is quite a bit smaller than the others—it begins with just six single crochets, so it has a tighter start. I’m still using a Magic Ring here to show you how I manage that, but as always, feel free to start with a chain-4 ring if that’s more your style. In the video tutorial I’ll also show you how to change colours in the last stitch of a round—a small touch that makes a big difference in keeping things looking polished.
