0:00
hey everyone Jane here with another fun and simple crochet Square tutorial last week I showed you how to make a single
0:06
color Square using a back and forth technique this week we're taking it up a notch with the two-tone version the
0:12
stitch pattern is exactly the same but this time I'm going to demonstrate how to work it with two colors if you
0:17
haven't tried the single color version yet I recommend starting there that tutorial provides a more detailed
0:22
explanation of the techniques use which are also relevant for this Square the back and forth technique is especially
0:28
useful for the two-ton Square because it eliminates the need to carry yarn across your work making it neat and easy this
0:34
versatile square is perfect for a variety of geometric patterns whether you're making blankets or other Home
0:40
Decor I've used it in my crochet quilt throw to create the classic Carpenter Stars design if you'd like to learn more
0:46
check out the description below for more details about the crochet quilt throw series I've chosen two contrasting
0:51
colors for this demonstration so you can clearly see the process as we work through the square both are worsted
0:57
weight Yarns and you can find more details about those in the description below you'll also need a crochet hook
1:02
for this demo I'm using a 5 mm hook which is a US size 8 or an H however if
1:07
you're following along with the crochet quilt throw I recommend using the 5.5 mm hook this slightly larger hook gives the
1:14
squares a softer more flowy feel perfect for the throw and as always I keep a
1:19
pair of scissors and a darting needle on hand for Finishing Touches at the end when making these squares for a throw be
1:25
sure to leave a long tail when fastening off for my crochet quilt throw I use a whip Stitch method to join the squares
1:31
and by leaving longer Tails I minimize the need to attach New pieces of yarn which means fewer ends to weave in when
1:38
finishing before we dive in let's talk about my use of the terms right side and wrong side I'll use these throughout to
1:45
help you stay oriented as we turn the work and ensure that we're facing the same direction for each round while the
1:51
square itself is fully reversible each side has a slightly different texture keeping track of the right side and
1:57
wrong side will also be important when we Assemble the squares for the final throw this way we can create a
2:02
consistent cohesive look on both sides with all the textures aligned okay let's
2:08
get started on our two-tone Square now in a previous tutorial I showed you how to do the solid version of this square
2:15
and in this one we're going to learn how to do a two-tone now I have two different colors here we're going to work with a red and a an off-white but
2:23
these give you a different versions of working with colors and how it will look
2:28
so remember this is was the original square and we worked back and forth and now we're going to do two
2:35
colors so that half of the square is one color and half is the other color and
2:41
it's going to go on the diagonal so it gives a really cool geometric look that you can use in a lot of patterns so
2:48
because the Red's a little easier to see I'll choose that one to start with it really doesn't matter which one you start with because when the square is
2:54
finished it's hard to tell where you started and where you ended which is good you can do this with a chain three
3:01
Foundation where you chain three stitches join them into a ring but I like to do the challenging thing so I'm
3:07
going to show you how I do it with a magic ring with two colors we start as we do a normal magic ring lying the yarn
3:14
over our Palm with the cut in facing us we wrap around our first two fingers
3:19
holding it with your thumb cross underneath hold that with your thumb and
3:25
back over three fingers then you take your hook and go under the first over
3:30
the second pull it through and twist it onto the hook then I go ahead with a
3:36
chain one by going over the one with over our third finger and pulling that through to lock it in place and creating
3:43
our first chain one magic ring is ready and now we can start our round one round one requires half double crochets so I
3:51
need to start with a chain two since I already have a chain one there I only need one more chain and that's our first
3:58
half double crochet chain two now we need 12 total in the
4:03
ring but I need six in red and six in the off white so I'm going to do five to
4:10
start with because I will change my color in the sixth half double crochet
4:16
this counts as our first one so I need to do four more and we do that simply by
4:23
working half double crochets into our ring while it's still open and loose
4:42
now I have five half double crochets and I count that chain two as a half double
4:48
crochet I'm ready to do my sixth one but this is where I'm going to change my yarn so have your other color ready to
4:56
go right here so you can just pick it up we wrap the yarn around around our hook insert into the magic
5:03
ring wrap the Yon around again and pull up a loop and I have three loops on the
5:08
hook now I'm going to change my color so it does seem to take some coordination
5:14
to make sure you keep everything in place while you're changing the colors so I drop the working yarn the red and I
5:22
pick up the white while I hold everything in place with this hand my right hand I get that
5:29
off off we ready to go as if I was joining it to a new round I wrap it around my hook and I pull it through all
5:37
three stitches that are on the hook now I have a lot going on here but I do have
5:43
my new color on my hook the working red yarn just leave it to the back and don't
5:49
worry about it it'll seem kind of loose here but we'll pull that up and darn that in at the end the off white yarn we
5:56
want to continue with six more half double crochets so yarn over with the off white and now
6:04
what I do is I work over the other two cut ends see how I have the two cut ends
6:09
right here I'm going to work over top of those and into the ring at the same
6:18
time and I leave my working red yarn to the back I don't touch
6:24
it it'll feel like everything's floppy and loose but just stay focused on the Stitch you're working on and it'll all
6:31
come together it does take a little bit of coordination and a little bit of just going with the flow don't freak out when
6:38
everything looks like it's falling off it just takes a little practice so we want six of these off whites half double
6:46
crochet all together and I am working say I'm working over the two cut ends as
6:52
well as I do this so I have 1 2 3 4 five running out of YN
7:02
and six so now I have six of the off we and
7:07
six of the red I take the color that I started with the red cut end that's the
7:14
one I want to pull finger and thumb at the base of the last Stitch and pull up
7:20
on that red pull it nice and secure now you're going to have a lot of
7:25
strands hitting around here and see how this Loop right here that's you're working ready yarn just give it a slight
7:31
tug to the back cuz you'll be picking it up and working with it when we get back to here so now we want to join our round
7:39
you want to go into the second chain of the red right here go right through the
7:45
center of that wrap your off we around pull up a loop and pull it through the
7:51
one on the hook and now you've done a slip stitch join and we're ready for round number two now we're going to be
7:57
working on the wrong side for the next round so we need to rotate our work to
8:03
the other side you can tell the wrong side cuz it's going to be the one that has the cut ends hanging off of
8:09
it we're going to continue to work with the off white so at this point I do
8:14
chain one now that I'm working with two colors it does make a difference which way I
8:20
rotate it although this round not so much because it's sitting up here at the top so it doesn't really matter which
8:26
way you rotate it I'm going to rotate it clockwise and I'm ready to start my next
8:32
round so I have the cut ends at the back we're not going to worry about them all they do is they signify that we're on
8:38
the wrong side of the work so holding those cut ends out of my way I want to proceed with round number two now in the
8:44
tutorial for the solid Square I use Stitch markers to show you where to go so you might want to revisit that one
8:50
just to see the basics for this square but in this one because we have two different colors that's really going to
8:56
help us find what stitches we're working into so I want to do a half double crochet so yarn over and I'm going to go
9:03
back into the same Stitch that I just joined into so right in there you can
9:10
see it easily because of the colors so go right in where you slipped into pull
9:16
up a loop three loops on the hook and make sure that they're parallel and not bunched up yarn over and pull through
9:23
all three so now we have our first half double crochet complete we want to do two single crochets one in each of the
9:30
first two stitches so you're looking for the first Stitch which is right here it's not this one that's kind of lying
9:36
half under your half double crochet that was the loop created by the slip stitch
9:41
we want to go into this Stitch right here and do a single crochet now we want
9:46
to work a second single crochet and work it into the next Stitch so each single
9:52
crochet goes into its own Stitch half double crochet in the slip stitch single
9:57
crochet in each of the next two now we're going to create our corner so we're going to do a half double crochet
10:03
chain two half double crochet into this next Stitch half double
10:08
crochet chain two and half double
10:15
crochet work a single crochet into each of the next two stitches still working
10:21
with the off-white we get to the last off white
10:29
white Stitch I want to do a half double crochet into that Stitch it's the first
10:35
half of this corner chain
10:40
two and here's where I'll change my color so we normally do chain Twos for
10:45
the corner but when I change my color I do chain two of the first color and then I do another chain with the opposite
10:52
color because I find as you join in the middle it it jams it up a little so it makes it the same size of space as a
10:59
regular chain two in one color so chain two in the off white and here's where we
11:05
pick up our red it's coming from the center of our work so don't pull too
11:10
tight but we're going to use it so I put it around my hand so stay with me here
11:15
because everything's going to get a little wonky before it gets really good and you're just going to pull it through
11:22
the loop on the hook so everything seems kind of big just pull it back down keep track of where your yarn is and see how
11:28
there's a big gap here not a problem yet I'm going to show you how to work that in so now that we've done our chain two
11:36
and we changed our color I do another chain
11:41
one because this one that keeps wanting to get really big when you pull it down it actually gets smaller than a normal
11:48
chain so this gives you the same space so chain two in the offwhite join the
11:54
red and then do another chain one in the red work a half double crochet into this
12:00
same chain space that we just worked in to complete the second half of this corner this is one of the hardest parts
12:06
of this entire Square so don't lose Faith we're getting there go under this strand right here
12:17
that's lying at the back that I joined here see how that strand is just kind of big and loopy I
12:25
want to go underneath that with my hook and then then under the yarn the
12:31
working yarn of red go back into the same Stitch that you just work that last
12:36
half double crochet into hold that finger holding all those stitches in place go into that Stitch so
12:44
you're going underneath the the red loose part back here yarn around the hook pull it
12:54
through and you got a lot going on on the hook here yarn around the hook and pull it through through everything on
13:00
the hook so use your thumb and finger to hold everything in place and pull that
13:05
Loop all the way through everything that's your half double crochet for the second half of the
13:11
corner now go back to the off we and just give that a little tug so that that chain closes up a bit and then you leave
13:20
it to the back where it will sit until we come back on the next round now we
13:25
have the red in place and we're moving on single crochet in the next next Stitch this Stitch right
13:33
here and a single crochet in the next Stitch I'm not working over any yarn you
13:39
keep that white yarn off to the side now we do a normal Corner which is half
13:44
double crochet chain two and a half double
13:51
crochet work a single crochet in each of the next two
13:57
stitches and we're back to where we joined I need to work a half double crochet into this same Stitch that the
14:04
first one was worked into half double
14:10
crochet chain two flip stitch in this first Stitch
14:18
right here and I've completed round number two you can tell we on the wrong side cuz
14:24
there's those cut ends and we're ready for round number three round now number
14:29
three is going to be done on the right side and because we're on the wrong side and we just did our slip stitch we want
14:34
to rotate our work again here it's going to matter which way I rotate the work I would prefer the working air did not lie
14:41
across the front of my work and if I rotate my work counterclockwise like this the working yarn which is red will
14:47
have to cross over the front of my work and it stands out against the contrast color I rather not have that now let's
14:54
go back to my wrong side this time we'll rotate our work clockwise and now now
14:59
the working erron wraps around the back of the stitch on the hook and lies behind our work that's where I want it
15:04
not crossing the stitches of the other color and ready to work the next round that gives you a cleaner turn and seems
15:10
to give the nicest diagonal line for the color change on the final square round number three is going to be single
15:16
crochets all the way around we start by slip stitching into this chain two space
15:22
we just did on the other round at the end of it just a slip stitch and through
15:28
the one on the hook we're in place to start our next round chain
15:34
one single crochet in that same chain two space and we're off and ready for
15:40
round number three single crochet in each of the next four
15:54
four make sure you get the Stitch and don't go into that chain stitch yet that
16:00
that Stitch kind of hangs over a little bit of the chain two space there that's a half double crochet for you so you now
16:06
have a single crochet in the chain two space and four single crochet across
16:12
this Edge we've reached the next chain two space and we want to do single crochet
16:19
chain two and a single crochet all into that chain two space we're going to work
16:25
across our next Edge which is another four single crochet crets
16:37
4 we've reached the next chain two space this is where it matters on the solid
16:43
Square I said stay as close as you can to the Stitch you just did because you want the red to stay with the red so we
16:50
do a single crochet into this chain two space with the
16:57
red I I do keep pulling the white up so that it's not super
17:02
loose chain two and we're going to switch our color dropping the red and I
17:09
usually drop it over to the right so it's out of the way picking up the
17:18
offwhite pull the off-white through the loop on the
17:23
hook and you can see we have this strand now but it's not as long as when we did the high half double crochet so I'm not
17:30
going to worry about it I have tried looping it over the hook and working it in but it doesn't really seem to make a
17:35
difference whether you do or whether you don't so I just leave it sit there so we go ahead and chain one more and then I
17:42
do a single crochet into the same chain two
17:48
space so you can see the Strand is there but as you work this chain space on the
17:53
next round it literally closes up to that Stitch so we're good like that
17:58
we've changed our color we've done a single crochet in the second half of this corner and we're often running down
18:05
this Edge single crochet in each of the next four stitches and leave that Red
18:11
over here don't work over
18:17
it single crochet in the next chain two space chain two and single crochet again
18:25
in that chain two space and you've turned your corner one more Edge to do with the white four single crochets one
18:33
per Stitch and we've come back to the chain
18:40
two space we joined in and I want to work a single crochet into that Stitch
18:45
and I keep it as close to this Stitch as possible so the white stays with the
18:50
white and the red stays with the red chain two slip stitch in the first Stitch of
18:58
the round there's round number three now
19:04
we're going to change to the wrong side again so taking a little look before we move on you see how the red and the
19:11
white are separated by this diagonal line that goes across gives it a nice two-tone look so let's go ahead with
19:18
round number four and that's going to be single crochets as well the first thing I want to do is rotate my work to the
19:24
wrong side because you can tell the wrong side because of these strands this is the right side we want to move to the
19:30
wrong side keeping my off-white yarn in place let's see what happens if I rotate the work
19:37
counterclockwise notice how the white yarn crosses over in front of the hook that's not what I want I prefer the yarn
19:43
to lie neatly behind the hook ready to use so instead we'll rotate the piece
19:49
clockwise now the yaron falls behind the hook exactly where I wanted and it's positioned perfectly for the next round
19:56
with the wrong side now facing let's get started on round four slip stitch in this chain two space that you just
20:03
worked into chain one work a single
20:08
crochet so the reason I do the chain one and then the single crochet is because
20:14
it makes the first single crochet more square if I just worked a single crochet
20:19
directly into that chain two space it would be kind of slanted and down the chain One lets me bring it up to height
20:27
and now it's squared and works with the rest of them it does create a little bit extra going on here but I have
20:33
experimented with both and I find if I just work the single crochet directly into the chain two space without the
20:40
slip stitch or the chain one it would be more over here and it tends to mess up
20:46
that nice diagonal line so a single crochet in the chain two space was what we've done work a single crochet into
20:53
each of the next six single crochets across this Edge
21:06
and we're back to our next Corner single crochet chain two and a
21:12
single crochet to turn the corner six more single crochets across the next
21:27
Edge and we've come to the next Corner work into this chain two
21:34
space single crochet and we want it to be as close to the last Stitch we did as
21:41
possible so that our colors stay on the same sides then chain
21:46
two and now we want to switch to the red so we're bringing our red back it's over
21:52
here now see and we put our white off to the side if you put it off to the right
21:58
then it's stays out of the way while you work the rest of the square at this point we have the chain two already and
22:03
I want to change to the red so I pull that through the loop on the hook and I
22:10
want to keep it as close to the chain two as possible so kind of Pull It in tight there so you don't have much going
22:16
on here but you have some and chain one that locks it in
22:22
place go ahead and work a single crochet into the chain two space don't worry
22:28
about that strand of yarn it lies right beside the single crochet and again we'll get worked in on the next
22:35
round so now we have red and we want to work six single crochet across this
22:42
Edge leave that white over here out of the
22:50
way you can tell we're on the wrong side because we have these strands facing us
22:59
single crochet in this chain two space from the previous round chain two and a
23:06
single crochet again in the same chain two space and we're going to work across our last Stitch single crochet in each
23:22
six and we're back to the chain two space that we started with
23:29
work a single crochet in that chain two space and make it as close to the Stitch that you just worked as possible keeping
23:37
those colors lined up chain two and slip stitch in that first single crochet of
23:44
the round you've completed round four and we only have one more round to do we're
23:50
going to do it from the right side so we want to rotate our work to get back to the right side and we want the yarn to
23:56
stay behind the hook I'll be rotating my work just like I have for the last few rounds in a clockwise Direction and
24:03
there my yarn ran behind my hook so you can't see it and it works perfectly this
24:08
is the right side cuz we don't have these strands hanging out they're on the other side Begin by slip stitching into
24:16
this chain two space that brings us partway back up to the middle of the chain two
24:22
space and then chain one work a half double crochet into this
24:35
space so there we have our half double crochet in our first chain two space I
24:41
will say there's other ways to do this some people like to use a half double crochet to join instead of the chain
24:47
stitches so that you already are starting halfway in the middle of the chain space I also tried that and I found it a
24:55
little bulky this method seems to work the best for me me but if you have different ideas go ahead and experiment
25:01
I definitely encourage people because we all crochet differently so something different might work better for you but
25:08
for me I like the slip stitching in the chain space chain one and then working a
25:13
half double crochet so now we're ready to work half double crochets all the way across eight
25:20
half double crochets across this Edge
25:40
we've reached the other corner and in that corner we will do half double
25:46
crochet chain two and a half double crochet that makes our
25:54
Corner another eight half double crochets one per Stitch across this
26:14
Edge count your stitches to make sure that you made it to the edge here because sometimes when you get to this
26:19
last one you can think is that a stitch or is that where I joined so just as long as you have the right count you're
26:26
good one in the corner and then 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and 8 we have
26:34
enough so now we're going to work into this corner a half double
26:40
crochet pull it right next to the Stitch that you just made trying to keep those
26:46
colors aligned they're going to peek through a little but it's the overall look you're going for chain
26:53
two drop your red pick up your off-white keeping the
26:59
red not too loose here you want to pick up the white and pull it through so
27:05
you're going to have kind of a strand here that's okay we'll work that in chain one more with the off
27:12
white go under that strand under the working yarn bring the hook back around
27:20
and go into the chain two space and complete your half double
27:26
crochet you can use your thumb finger here to hold everything in place yarn over and pull through all of the loops
27:33
on the hook pull your red up a little bit tighter there so that it's
27:38
secure and we did our half double crochet in the chain two space now we need to do eight more across here
28:04
we've reached the next corner and I want to do a half double crochet chain two half double crochet
28:17
corner eight half double crochets cross our last Edge
28:36
let's go back and make sure we have enough I might have to do one more so we have the one in the corner that doesn't
28:42
count one 2 3 4 5 6 and seven yes I need
28:48
one right in there half double crochet in here that's
28:54
the last Stitch always count your stitches it's so easy to get off kilter
29:00
quickly back to the chain two space where we started do a half double crochet in
29:07
there right next to the Stitch you just worked sometimes I use my fingers to
29:12
kind of pull things back and forth so they sit the way I want them to sit chain
29:18
two slip stitch in this first half double crochets so see how by doing the
29:25
chain one I set the half double crochet up to almost the same levels as the rest
29:30
that was my goal go under that first half double crochet stitch and pull the
29:37
yarn through and you finished your Square you can see the nice line right
29:44
down the diagonal you're going to see a little bit of the color showing through right where they join sometimes it
29:49
depends on how you crochet too but it should be fairly straight and even there's texture involved so you're going
29:56
to have colors showing but this is the right side and this is the wrong side
30:01
because you have those two strands those can get worked in afterwards what I would do is I would put them on a
30:07
darning needle and I would work them only in their own color I wouldn't want them to cross over into the other color
30:13
just so they don't show through and I would work them back and forth you can even go up another round and work them
30:20
in that way with the darning needle same with the off we down here just to keep
30:25
it secure because keeping in mind this is a magic ring so you want these to be worked in well so the magic ring doesn't
30:32
slip you could keep going with these two colors and you can make a bigger square or you could even just use a little
30:39
square like this for home decor in cool geometric shapes if you'd like to see
30:44
how I incorporate the square into my crochet quilt throw check the description below for more details thank
