Learn To Draw Flowers With Shapes Lesson 4

Here we are on Lesson #4 in our Learn To Draw Series.  That means we are half way through our drawing adventure.  If you have been following along, then you have a nice little tool box of shapes so far to create some really beautiful little designs.    As you start to work more and more with these shapes, you will start to notice how just about everything around you is made up of basic shapes.  It is all in how you put them together.  When you break it down like that, drawing starts to become not only easier, but also alot of fun.

So let’s see where we are at.

  •  Lesson #1 we played with Circle ideas
  •  Lesson #2 we learned how to add in the Teardrop in various forms.
  •  Lesson #3 we started to loosen up with our Curved Petal.

In this Lesson which is the 4th in the Learn To Draw With Shapes Series, we are going to learn a new shape. Today we are going to get creative with the Diamond Shape.

Learn To Draw Shape #4 – The Diamond

This shape is a very versatile one.  It can be worked into flower and into leaves just as easily.   We will explore how to create this shape with sharp edges and also with rounded edges for a softer more organic feel.

Diamond with Sharp Corners

Diamond with Rounded Sides

Learn To Draw

This shapes personality comes from how you draw it’s corners.  Are you looking for a sharp edge petal, a softer more organic flowing leaf, or a combination of the two.  If you take a look in nature, you will find a combination of both the sharp edge and the soft corners in most flowers and plants.

Spacing

    • Use the same size of Diamond
    • Place them around a centre point
    • Fit them together like puzzle pieces for a star like shape.

Sharp VS Round

    • Space out your petals for a different look
    • Use sharp edges or round off the sides
    • Have them flow around a centre point without touching each other

Overlap

    • Place your shape so it overlaps the previous one
    • Rotate them around a centre point using different degrees of rotation.
    • Leave all the lines in for a lacy look or erase out the lines that fall inside the leaf beside it to get an overlapping look

Shapes Within Shapes

    • Create a simple curved diamond flower
    • Now add a second wavy line that runs through the middle of each diamond shaped petal
    • This gives your flower a little more dimension.
