Welcome back to our Learn to Draw with Shapes, Free Series. Today we are on Lesson #5 and we have a brand new shape for you. I call it the Wavy Leaf. It’s actually the Diamond Shape, but again, we are giving it a loose, freeform look. Letting it express itself and putting a wave into it. Grab your pencil and let’s get creating.
Let’s just do a quick recap of our previous lessons:
- Lesson #1 we covered our first shape the Circle and it’s various forms.
- Lesson #2 the Teardrop was our focus and we explored adding it to our circle.
- Lesson #3 here we learned to get a little looser and more expressive with our new shape the Curved Petal.
- Lesson #4 the Diamond was covered where we explored how to add softer curves to a traditionally sharp edged shape.
And here we are on Lesson #5 and our shape is the Wavy Leaf.
Learn To Draw Shape #5 – The Wavy Leaf
Just like we took the Teardrop from Lesson #2 and made it flexible for Lesson #3’s Curvy Petal, we are now going to do the same with today’s shape. We are taking the Diamond from Lesson #4 and we are going to add some loose curvy sides to it, to create our wavy leaf.
Rounded Diamond
Wavy Leaf
This is such a fun and expressive shape to create. The wavy edge of this shape gives it so much expression. I even love the way it FEELS to draw this shape.
Shaping
-
- This shape gives you more liberty in how you shape them around each other
- Place them around a centre point
- Have the sides touch and shape them in relation to each other
Spacing
-
- Use the same size of leaf shape
- Space them out around a centre point
- Curve them to fit the space required
- Try using mixing the sizes as well

Layout
-
- This shape is great for both flowers and for leafy botanicals
- overlap the shapes
- leave the lines in for a lacy leafy look, or erase them out for a more solid leafy appearance
Combine With Other Shapes
-
- Use this shape with other shapes you have learned
- Place them around another shape, such as a circle
- Have the points touch your centre shape or space them out so they float around it.
