This simple little Mosaic Crochet square can be used to make bigger projects or just use it for a stylish little coaster. Make a bunch and give them as house gifts to all your friends.
In this tutorial I will explain the basics of the stitches used in Mosaic Crochet and how to follow a chart. I provide the chart below if you would like to print it out and follow along with me.
This method is called Inset Mosaic Crochet, …..with a few adjustments. So if you are at all familiar with the regular Inset technique, you may find this tutorial has a few differences. As per the regular Inset method, the piece is created by working back and forth and you will be only using one colour per row.
Supplies and Materials
The Sample Square Shown is worked with a 5 mm (US 8 / H )crochet hook
The beauty of these squares not having to “fit” anything, you can work these in any weight of yarn you want and adjust your hook to your preference.
I have used acrylic yarn, but cotton works great too, even better for coasters as they absorb moisture well.
Sample square finished measurements = 5″ x 5″
Medium Weight (size 4) Yarn.
Yarn Used in Sample Colour Way:
A – Teal Heather – Bernat Super Value
B – Putty – Impeccable by Loops and Threads
1 ball of each is enough to make alot of squares
If you have alot of small balls of odds and ends then this is the perfect little pattern for you. In fact to make this one I used less than 10g of yarn of each colour. My fav is to make a bunch of coasters and give them as housewarming gifts.

Mosaic Crochet Basics
First lets go over some chart basics
- This Chart only has Right Side Rows.
- All Wrong Side Rows are not marked on chart as they are ALL worked in sc with the same colour as row before
- Only One Colour Every Two Rows
- Change colour at beginning of RS rows only
Right Side
Wrong Side
How is this different from Traditional Inset Method?
- I use a Single Crochet Back Loop Only instead of the Chain St used in traditional method
- My Double Crochet will be worked into the unworked Front Loop 2 rows
- All Wrong Side Rows are straight regular single crochet

Special Stitches
Single Crochet in Back Loop Only
Work a single crochet into the back loop only of the working stitch
Double Crochet in Front Loop Only – two rows below
Work a double crochet into the front loop only of the stitch sitting two rows below current working row. Always skip the stitch on the current working row, lying behind the dcfl just made
Benefits of this Method
The main reasons I do inset mosaic crochet this way are as follows:
- This method eliminates the chain loops that string across the back of the work. This gives a firmer fabric and you can make longer runs of double crochet stitches without tangling your fingers in the chain strings.
- I love that every second row I don’t have to look at the chart, because it is ALWAY single crochet.
- When an X appears on the chart, I just have to look down my piece and find that unworked front loop from 2 rows below and it tells me exactly where to put my stitch.
