0:00
hey everyone Jane here back with another
0:02
crochet tutorial and this time it's all
0:04
about color one of the most common
0:06
questions I get is about my process for
0:09
choosing colors so today is all about
0:11
sharing some tips and tricks I use to
0:14
decide on the perfect combinations for
0:16
my granny squares while my final
0:18
decisions are based on how the colors
0:19
feel to me I do follow a process to give
0:22
myself options so today I'm going to
0:24
walk you through some of those so one
0:27
way I start is by browsing my camera
0:29
roll I love snapping Quick photos of
0:31
anything that catches my eye nature
0:34
scenes especially sunrises and sunsets
0:37
or even plants in my garden these are
0:39
all my favorites I also have an
0:41
inspiration board over on Pinterest
0:43
where I save images with cool color
0:45
combos these are the sources that kick
0:47
in my inspiration and these I can do
0:51
anywhere from there I'll gather a range
0:53
of yarn colors to experiment with I do
0:56
this with my little baskets of sample
0:57
squares but before I get into that under
1:00
understanding the basics of the color
1:01
wheel can be really helpful so don't
1:03
worry we're not diving too deep into
1:05
Theory here but let's quickly review
1:08
this so we start with primary colors red
1:11
blue and yellow remember those paint
1:13
bottles from school those are the
1:15
foundations for all colors next we have
1:18
the secondary colors green orange and
1:20
purple these are created by mixing the
1:22
primary colors and then we have What's
1:25
called the tertiary colors and these are
1:27
the blends of primary secondary colors
1:29
which often make up a rich varied
1:31
palette kind of like my yarn wall then
1:33
we have the neutral colors which are
1:35
white black gray and I include Browns
1:38
there when we're talking about yarn
1:40
these are often used as background
1:42
colors to create balance and give space
1:44
for the main colors to be the star of
1:46
the show we're also going to touch on
1:48
color value which is the light and
1:50
darkness of a color but that's something
1:52
I'm just going to demonstrate a little
1:53
bit later so back to my sample squares
1:56
these are like fabric samples or paint
1:59
chips for me for every new yarn I bring
2:01
into my home I make a quick Square using
2:04
my easy breezy Square pattern I like
2:06
them all to be the same so that I can
2:08
compare them easily it's a simple square
2:11
with a few Stitch variations to add
2:13
texture so I can see how the Color Works
2:15
in a granny square context and I keep
2:17
these samples organized by color baskets
2:20
you can find the tutorial for the easy
2:22
breezy Square in the description below
2:25
but you can use any square of your
2:27
choosing basket one has all the Reds
2:30
Blues greens yellows purples and oranges
2:32
and all the variations in between embasa
2:36
2 which oddly has the same number of
2:39
samples has all my neutrals so I have in
2:42
there all my whites my grays my blacks
2:45
my Browns and the beiges I don't label
2:47
these squares because I handle them a
2:49
lot and the labels tend to fall off so
2:52
instead I have a binder where I keep
2:53
samples of all my Yarns with the brand
2:55
information and that way I can keep all
2:58
the brands together this helps me keep
3:00
track because sometimes Yarns get
3:02
discontinued so it's nice to have a
3:03
record here so I can find a nice
3:05
substitute if I need to if you're
3:07
interested in making yourself a yarn
3:09
binder I do have a tutorial on my
3:11
YouTube channel as well for that again
3:13
the link will be in the description
3:14
below so let's take a look at an example
3:18
here this squar is my sand dollar
3:19
squared pattern which I made using a
3:22
fall inspired palette that also works
3:24
well for the holidays I pulled Reds
3:26
greens Amber tones and neutrals to
3:30
figure out what I wanted to use in this
3:31
Square for most squares I stick to about
3:34
three to four colors at the most but for
3:36
larger squares I may use more colors and
3:39
definitely for blankets I like to use a
3:41
lot of colors like 10 to 15 colors to
3:44
get that nice eclectic look that I
3:45
spread out among all the squares I like
3:48
to dabble a little in quilting too so I
3:50
love scrap quilts and this definitely
3:52
inspires my approach to crochet I'll
3:54
have a future video on how I work out
3:56
all the square combos for a full blanket
3:59
because once I've chosen the 10 to 15
4:02
colors then I have to figure out how I
4:03
want to arrange them in the blanket so
4:06
that it balances so watch for that one
4:08
too coming soon once I've narrowed down
4:11
my choices I make a variety of test
4:12
squares experimenting with different
4:14
color orders to see what works best and
4:17
which one feels the nicest now let's
4:19
talk about color value the lightness or
4:21
darkness of a color this can
4:23
significantly affect how patterns stand
4:25
out my trick to determine the color
4:27
values is taking a photo of my square is
4:30
usually on my phone and then I
4:32
desaturate it on my phone as well to
4:35
help me see the value of the colors so
4:38
even though they're all red I can now
4:40
see which ones are light and which ones
4:41
are dark this might be obvious when
4:43
you're dealing with one color but it
4:45
gets a little more complicated when
4:46
you're dealing with a whole bunch of
4:48
colors let me show you an example here's
4:50
a square where I used a green a red a
4:54
caramel and a putty when I desaturate
4:56
the picture you can see the green and
4:58
red are similar in Val value the caramel
5:00
is slightly lighter and the putty is
5:02
much lighter creating a lot more
5:04
contrast using this technique really
5:07
helps me decide on what look I'm going
5:09
for and it's really just about the value
5:12
of the color that you're looking at
5:14
let's compare five versions of the
5:15
square using the same four colors which
5:18
one do you like best pause the video to
5:20
decide and choose your
5:25
favorite have you got your favorite now
5:28
let's desaturate them to check the
5:30
values does your choice still hold up or
5:33
have you changed your
5:35
mind this trick helps when I'm stuck
5:37
between a few options sometimes I want
5:39
colors with similar values for a softer
5:41
calmer look while other times I prefer a
5:44
high contrast for a bold statement as
5:46
you can see with these two examples the
5:48
square on the left gives you a much
5:50
calmer look and the square on the right
5:53
has more of a statement this shows up
5:55
when you desaturate and look at the
5:57
values I hope these ideas inspire ire
5:59
you to play with color and develop your
6:01
own palettes these are just some of my
6:03
tips and tricks let me know how these
6:05
tips work for you and I will be creating
6:07
more videos going forward on how I
6:09
choose my colors specifically for
6:11
certain squares I'll walk you through
6:13
the process in those videos so stay
6:15
